The Boondocks is an American animated television series on Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim. Created by Aaron McGruder, based upon his comic strip of the same name, it premiered in the United States on November 6, 2005.[1] The series begins with an African American family moving from Chicago's South Side to the fictional suburban community of Woodcrest (and later to Wienerville) as a result of a housing development taking over their previous residence. As the family settles into their new community, they come up against a different racial and social system, encountering such characters as Wendell, Mr. Garvey and Huey Freeman (a brash black youth who is constantly harassed by police officer John Withers). The central theme of the series is the futility of seeking peace and understanding through compromise and the need for independence in the face of oppressive authority. "The Boondocks" was originally based on McGruder's comic strip in newspapers in the mid-1990s. The strip soon grew popular, encouraging McGruder to expand on its concept. He changed the comic strip's setting from a fictional suburb to a real American city, and created new characters based on his own observations of black culture. In the strip, the Grasleys are a black family living in a poor inner-city neighborhood; almost immediately after moving there, they encounter police harassment and hostility. The series' first episode depicts an extended family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner at their farmhouse: uncle Aaron (voiced by McGruder), aunt Ieasha (Brenda Withers), and cousins Huey (voiced by Carl Lumbly) and Riley (voiced by Seth Rogen). cfa1e77820
